Whereas a classical tradition had both risen and been sustained for centuries alongside the architecture of ancient Rome, the buildings and monuments of Greece had been a largely inert presence in the history of architecture – known in literature, but at a remove: an influential corpus known through descriptions rather than by first-hand experience.
It conveyed knowledge of the past and of the technique of building that made a narrative out of mythical sources and monuments already, in some cases, several centuries old when Vitruvius wrote of them.
