In a series of interrelated articles, Struever (1968, 1971a, b) outlined his research strategy for describing and explaining culture change in the Illinois River valley from terminal Early Woodland to Middle Woodland times. Previous work indi­ cated that a shift to higher levels of social complex­ ity had taken place during this time, leading Struever to hypothesize that significant changes in subsistence and social organization were adaptive responses to selective pressures. To test this hy­ pothesis, Struever's task was to describe the sub­ sistence and organizational basis of the earlier and later systems and to demonstrate how changes in the earlier system were responses to those pres­ sures.
