On one occasion he produced a replica of his fa mous Paradise festival; on another he constructed a robot lion which walked and opened its breast to eject a bunch of French lilies in front of the king. Either here, or more probably in Rome, Leonardo had produced his last painting, St. John the Baptist. Probably Leonardo painted this last symbolic figure when he was ill with cerebrovascular disease. Quite apart from its artistic merit, it is striking for the fact that it betrays no sign of Leonardo's recently acquired anatomical knowledge.
