They argue that stimuli can be processed at different levels. Preliminary stages involve the analysis of purely formal features such as lines, angles, brightness, pitch and loudness. Later, or ‘deeper’ stages involve matching input against existing schemata in order to extract patterns and meaning. They propose that ‘trace persistence is a function of depth of analysis, with deeper levels of analysis associated with more elaborate, longer lasting, and stronger traces’ (p. 676). They refer to two types of processing; Type 1 processing involves the ‘repetition of analyses that have already been carried out’ while Type 2 processing requires ‘deeper analysis of the stimulus’.
First, tasks that require subjects to recall or summarize materials they have read result in deeper cognitive processing, as they have to integrate textual and schematic knowledge. In contrast, tasks that require reading without recall make no such demand. Second, tasks that require subjects to read a text, formulate a set of questions about the text and then answer them also promote elaboration of the input stimulus. This type of task is of particular interest because it allows for interventional training; subjects can be taught what kinds of questions to ask.
