Männlichkeit ist nicht nur eine Idee in den Köpfen oder eine individuelle Identität. Männlichkeit ist allgegenwärtig und eingegossen in die sozialen Beziehungen. Wir müssen Veränderungen dieser sozialen Beziehungen untersuchen, wenn wir die geschichtliche Dimension von Männlichkeit erkennen wollen. In seinem kürzlich erschienenen Buch "The Making and Breaking of the Australian Family" hat Michael Gilding deutlich gemacht, daß wir das geschlossene Gebilde "Familie" aufbrechen und die einzelnen Komponenten betrachten müssen: Kinderversorgung, Erwerbsarbeit, Sexualität, Arbeitsteilung, und so weiter.
