Future challenges towards cost-reduction needs will require refrigerator developments that provide even lower equipment expenditures coupled with greater reliability. In the past few years, pulse-tube refrigerator systems have been improved substantially and are likely to lead to enhanced reliability over a wide range of temperatures. Another approach that appears to have similarly great promise for much larger utilizations are refrigeration systems that use mixed gases, now beginning to be available commercially.
Over the 15-year time span since the first delivery of a commercial MRI magnet, today's much better magnets cost less than one-half of those originally sold. Meanwhile, helium consumption has gone from about one liter per hour to less than one-tenth of that amount, due to advances in cryogenic engineering and the introduction of cryogenic "shield coolers". Even though low-field MRI systems that utilize permanent magnets have achieved a significant market share, high-field-superconductor-based systems will continue to dominate MRI for the future.
