Each Maison Jaoul combines two vaults of different widths into a multistory block with an identity as a cubic form rather than as a simple linear extrusion. The complex patterning of the walls and the perpendicular arrangement of the blocks also lessen the sense of continuous linear form. Stirling associated the pyramidal massing of the blocks with traditional Indian architecture. Because the profile of the arches appears only on the upper levels, as if the volume were a single, double-height vault, the arches have a monumental quality suggestive of Roman vaults as well.
For the organization of this "architectural mechanism" Le Corbusier looked to various sources, including vernacular Mediterranean dwellings and a small bistro he frequented in Paris, which had a double-height salon and a small kitchen tucked below a mezzanine. As Reyner Banham has observed, however, it was in the nineteenth-century Parisian studio-workshop that Le Corbusier discovered a type combining the directness of vernacular architecture, the spatial formula of the cafe, and the forms of industry.
