In an elemental way, King Lear is all about the difficulties we were experiencing: about blindness, bad consequences and misinterpretations, played out in one of the world’s most famously dysfunctional families. And, given the conspicuous absence of the mother (who was Mrs. ) the play was, in the mid-1970s, extraordinarily resonant with a culture where fathers ruled the roost. Some kids had fathers who swayed in church and smelled suspiciously of alcohol, which no one ever mentioned. If your cat produced a litter of kittens, it was your Dad who let you keep one or two and knocked the others on the head with a mallet.
Given that fatigue and time constraints are overriding concerns for these students, my immediate aim in putting together literature courses was to stave off their pressing urge to sleep. Students would often voluntarily stand up in my classes in order to stay awake, and I didn’t take it personally. But by far my greater challenge was in understanding and making use of the structures of obedience that regulate the students’ lives and duties at the Academy. They are getting paid to study within a stringent disciplinary environment, and the pressures imposed on them – especially since they are just fresh out of school – are considerable.
