The elevator lobby links the new and old sections of the floor. Although there is a difference in ceiling height of about one foot, the differential is effectively masked, and even library visitors familiar with the old building have to be shown where the dividing line is between old and new.

Planning such a seamless architectural solution involves more than enlarging an existing structure. As many librarians know, additions bring with them their own set of issues and concernssite considerations, financial constraints, aesthetics, and function. Three case studies in this book illustrate how library staffs and architectural design teams can work closely together to plan seamless additions that are successful solutions to building problems. We are pleased to present this publication that began as a good idea, went on to become a conference program presented at the 1993 Annual Conference of the American Library Association in New Orleans, and has emerged as a title in the LAMA Occasional Paper Series.
