The career of Emanuel Schikaneder, man of the theater, had begun. He started his first season with his Hamlet, which was already highly regarded. The audience was not disturbed by the fact that the play was given in the bowdlerized "happy ending" version by the successful theater secretary and dramatist Franz von Heufeld. Shakespeare was treated very freely, without any literary scruples, and naively regarded in Germany as merely a source of exciting stories and good roles. Othello was also played as The Handkerchief or Othello, the Moor of Venice, adapted by a certain J.
Stephen's Cathedral, and that Mozart attended his productions. The Emperor also attended Schikaneder's first nights at the Kärntnertor theater, but there were fewer in the audience than had been hoped for. The Kumpf-Schikaneder company was dissolved at the beginning of 1785 for reasons of personal incompatibility. The director simply could not give up his amorous, extramarital escapades, and Eleonore finally had enough. She took her revenge by breaking up the conjugal household, going off to live with Friedel and forming her own theater company with him.
Schikaneder, however, took his revenge: assured of the Emperor's favor he could afford to ridicule citizens who visited his theater too rarely to keep it solvent. It turns on a noble Doge who is to be overthrown by aristocratic rivals aided by a sorceress; at the same time the parade ship "Bucentaurus" is to be blown up.
