I do not apologize for that; it is a fact. The origin of this particular book is bizarre. In another connection I became involved in the question of whether legitimate reduction° of social phenomena to puristically biological° explanation is possible. On the one hand, most sociologists and anthropologists, joined by a rather surprising spate of biologists, maintain that such reduction is not, even in theory, a possibility. On the other hand, those who call themselves sociobiologists° seem to hold, in essence, that if explanations of social phenomena get very far as science, most of them will be puristically biological° explanations.
I doubt it affects many things directly. The language we initially store, however, is probably much more relevant to everything we do subsequently. What I maintain here is that (1) one set of circumstances, wherein all initial learning occurs, has not been generally recognized or fully explored; (2) one may legitimately wonder if there are teachers who are ever as important as the first teachers, and, if so, in what respects; and (3) one can make many generalizations about who or what these initial teachers aregeneralizations that are neither tautologically true nor trivially false.
I do not believe that such reductions, or comparable ones, are out of the question. I do not see in any such beliefs any commitment to any particular set of social evaluations. The possibility of scientifically legitimate reductions tells us nothing of the worth of anyone or anythingincluding that possibility itself.
