We require diverse tools to understand language, symbols, and the world. Mathematics and literature are key means in coming to terms with the world. These constructs of language are in and of the world but are not the world: they are possible worlds. Through analogy and contrast, comparisons define the two parts being brought together. The same is true of disciplines. By comparing literature with history— although they share rhetoric, analysis, and narrative— interpreters see that these fields show their differences.
