Most major cities work by bringing people together in places where they can form crowds and develop a sense of collective identity – whether the place is the Agora of ancient Athens (pages 306–307) or Fifth Avenue in New York. Los Angeles does not work in that way, and its citizens rarely meet one another by chance in the street. The city’s public realm is less splendid than the homes of some of its wealthier citizens, and the road network that enables travel from one destination to the next is the greatest of the public buildings.
Within the fortifications of a medieval town there was protected space, where people and livestock would muster if the region were under attack. Even when life was running normally, there dwellings would have been many more animals in the town than would be expected today, especially horses, but also hens, goats and pigs, which would live in the ‘undeveloped’ parts, reached by a network of narrow alleys and lanes that ran back from the main thoroughfares. Houses with lower status would be found in these areas, some of them no more than hovels.
The inside surface can melt away with the internal heat, but the blocks of snow tend to weld together.
