As Director of Advanced Manufacturing Research, moving more recently to the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Sciences as Senior Consultant. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering of the United States and has been a recipient of a variety of honours and honorary degrees in various countries. Dr Merchant's research has created important advances in the science of manufacturing, including the concepts of the systems approach to manufacturing and the computer integrated manufacturing system.
