The grief Joyce felt for his father’s loss is offset by the new life. James Joyce’s grandson was born on February 15, 1932, and his birth seemed to countervail John Joyce’s death. Joyce wrote his most moving poem, “Ecce Puer,” that same day (Ellmann 646). While the first passage does not use Ellmann’s exact language, it does list the same ideas he proposes as the critical underpinning of the poem without citing his work. Since this interpretation is Ellmann’s distinct idea, this constitutes plagiarism.
