An opera performance attracts a mass gathering, which keeps Dong oral tradition alive. In the chapters that follow, the workings of architecture among the minority groups in southern China—in the case of the Dong the settlement pattern, public structures, and housing, as well as the transformation of their roles due to modernization—are framed in detail in a succession of movements between the analysis of the built habitat as spatial dispositions and that of their “social life” in the process of making and inhabiting.

Since Chinese script is pictographic, however, the implication of such meanings is usually supported by the meaning of their radicals. After 1949, when the new Communist government produced its oYcial definition of minority nationalities, a new character, “侗,” was created. 4 The Dong call themselves Gaeml. Within the variety of local dialects they are also called Jaeml and Jeml.
