However, he was so far behind, there seemed little hope of his ever being able to pass the state test for tenth graders. Limited Formal Schooling Student: Halima Halima, a Somali Bantu refugee, came to the United States at sixteen.
The nearest rural school closed frequently because there were no teachers. When there was school, he seldom did homework because his home situation was chaotic. As a result, his reading and writing skills in Spanish were the equivalent of about a second or third grader, and his academic content knowledge was equally limited. In his new school, his ESL teacher, who spoke Spanish, used many different strategies to try to engage her students, but Ismael sat at his desk and did nothing for several weeks.
However, when Victor went from elementary school to middle school, he was separated from his elementary school friends. At the large inner-city middle school, he was threatened by older boys, and they encouraged him to join a gang.
