The nearest rural school closed frequently because there were no teachers. When there was school, he seldom did homework because his home situation was chaotic. In his new school, his ESL teacher, who spoke Spanish, used many different strategies to try to engage her students, but Ismael sat at his desk and did nothing for several weeks.
