Fleetwood and Garrick quelled a second attempt at intimidation by filling the pit with pugilists armed with clubs. Order gradually returned, but Macklin was to act no more at Drury Lane while Fleetwood held the patent. Though the difference between the actors was eventually mediated, and though they acted together peaceably, Macklin's distaste for his former friend grew inveterate over the years, as passages in his commonplace book show. Unable for the moment to secure employment in the patent houses, Macklin resolved to form his own company from among young pupils trained to act according to his theories.

Charles Macklin was probably born in the parish of Culdaff, County Donegal, Ireland, in 1699, one of two children of Terence Melaghlin (or McLaughlin) and his wife, née Agnes Flanagan. Undocumented claims in contemporary lives of the actor that Macklin sprang from more aristocratic stock were weighed and found wanting by William Appleton in Charles Macklin an Actor's Life (1960), which contributes substantially to the present account.
