When my mother fi lled out my initial registration form, she and I didn’t realize that ROTC and physical education didn’t count as full credits. Because I took both, my stint at Kent State would take four and a half years. This didn’t sit well with my grandparents, who had difficulty understanding 32 how you could go to school for four years, pass every course, and still not graduate.
Nothing was more important than belief in myself. The previous summer I’d been taught a valuable lesson about taking on new challenges, one I’ve tried to teach to every athlete I’ve coached. My seven best friends and I were swimming in the Ohio River, as we were prone to do on hot summer days, when one of our group came up with the bright idea that we should swim all the way across the river, about a mile at that point. Whoever finished last would walk back across the bridge, get the car, and pick everybody else up.
