Instead, guns were designed to fire a massed broadside immediately prior to coming alongside an enemy, and then soldiers and sailors would fight a boarding action. In 1545 the Mary Rose was typical of the other major warships in the Navy Royal, carrying almost as many soldiers as it did sailors (185 soldiers to 200 mariners and 20 gunners). These troops were armed with ranged weapons (mainly longbows, augmented by a few handguns) and melee weapons (pikes and bills), while everyone on board, sailors or soldiers, would have some form of knife or dagger, if not a sword or axe.
