In this ‘no-man’s land’ of pure language, that would entail our regarding loss from a fixed vantage point that postmodern thinking cannot recognize. What is left in the ‘infinite play of signification’ is exactly that: play; a field in which ‘the ultimate’ and the ‘serious’ must be perpetually crosscut, bracketed by the absurd, the lunatic, by release, by not only dissolution but also innovation; alternately grave and ludic – swinging high, swinging low, turning all upside down – it is a state of eternal oscillation.
In these suggestions I’ve spoken in extremely ‘coarse-textured’ terms, but I think they can serve our present purposes. The topic here is not the ‘truth’ of what ‘serious’ theorists might have said of linguistic indeterminism, but the contours of what postmoderns have taken to be its truth, and the power and implications of that.
