The art in Tintin would become crisper and more polished in later volumes but this is still wonderful stuff with vertigo inducing skyscrapers, horses, Indians, gangsters, rocky mountains, vast open plains, old cars and cruise ships. The first two Tintin books, Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo, are hopelessly dated now and are almost considered as early oddities rather than a part of the series. Tintin in America could perhaps be seen as the first book in the series that clearly shows the potential greatness of Tintin and it's no surprise that it was the first book that Hergé was happy to licence outside of the Le Petit Vingtième magazine.
A scientific expedition is duly launched to the polar regions in the trawler Aurora to find the meteorite with Captain Haddock in command and Tintin and Professor Phostle part of the crew. However, a rival expedition, funded by financier Bohlwinkel from the (fictional) country of São Rico, is also determined to find the precious "Phostlite" and claim it for themselves... The Shooting Star has a great beginning and a great final section but doesn't always quite maintain these high standards in the middle portion of the book and therefore just misses having a chance of being one of the very best Tintin stories.
The book is an example of Hergé moving away from isolated incidents and starting to become more ambitious and adept at giving the reader a proper story that is all interconnected. Tintin becomes mixed up with rebel leader General Alcazar by accident here and begins the friendship that would see Alcazar become a recurring character in the Tintin series. Alcazar returned in The Seven Crystal Balls and then went on to feature in several other books, taking his place amongst the regular supporting characters in the Tintin universe.
