Not only for a taste of Shakespeare’s incredible words (sometimes I had to read a quote fifty times to understand it), but also for his presence. We know very little about Shakespeare the man. It is his words that make him come alive. I started with one quote (“o wonderful, wonderful . ”) then scattered other familiar ones where they fit. Then I thought: Why not one for every scene? I love Ophelia’s sad “There’s Rosemary, that’s for remembrance .
And then he told us why scholars don’t take such theories seriously at all. He spoke at some length about the lack of copyright protection and the tendency of one acting company to rip off the property of another if they could just get their hands on the script. Consequently, there was usually only one complete script; the copies given to the actors consisted of only their scenes and the preceding cue lines, if necessary. This was not only to avoid needless labor in copying but also to protect the work.
