Place soft clouds in the lower sky area with warm white mix. Brighten some of the cloud tops with thicker white paint, then gently mop to soften the edges. Step 2: Block in Distant Tree Line With a no. 12 badger flat, brush-mix a cool gray-green using the medium green mix, peach and a speck of Cobalt Blue. Block in the most distant trees, using a very lean amount of paint and keeping texture to a minimum. Switch to a no. 6 badger filbert and detail the tops of trees where they are silhouetted against the sky and clouds.
Use only vertical strokes with the no. 24 badger flat. The colors are darkest along the shoreline and fade out as they come forward to the center of the lake. Avoid painting over the sky reflections and distant hill reflections in the water. Step 13: Place Reflected Colors in Water Place the orange, red, yellow, and light green reflection colors in the water directly underneath the trees of those colors. Use the same colors you used to paint the foliage and keep your strokes vertical. Again, avoid painting over the pink and blue sky reflections in the near foreground of the water.
Along the shoreline of the banks at right, use Naples Yellow for the reflections of the grass colors in the water. indd 60 2/21/08 4:29:17 PM Step 14: Blend Reflections To begin blending the reflected colors in the lake water, use the flat side of a clean no. 24 badger flat and only horizontal motions with very light pressure. Blend outward from the lightest colors into the darker colors, wiping your brush on a paper towel after every stroke to keep the colors clean. Using a clean, dry (no moisture in the brush at all) badger flat, turn the brush to the chisel edge and indicate some horizontal lines of water movement and fine ripples that reflect the orange foliage.
