Medieval Wales by R. Ian Jack

By R. Ian Jack

The assets for the background of medieval Wales are scanty, sporadic and bodily scattered. Neither in archival, narrative nor archaeological continues to be is Wales reminiscent of England, and what survives is much less available, for there was a striking reluctance between Welsh students to supply publications and surveys for this hard corpus of fabric. the aim of Medieval Wales is to check the heritage and survival of files produced via administrations within what's now Wales, princely, seigneurial, ecclesiastical, municipal; to point the relevance of English authentic documents to scholars of Welsh background; to offer an advent to the most narrative resources; to place the paintings of the Welsh antiquaries right into a wider context; to reconsider the full query of autonomous Welsh coinage; and to collect dialogue of Welsh archaeological continues to be, place-name stories and early cartography.

Soc. Cymm. (1948), 334. , 343. 1 Early Welsh Genealogical Tracts, ed. Bartrum, viii. 41 Medieval Wales Heraldry too became popular. It is significant that the oldest surviving European ordinary of arms (grouping together designs of a single sort, a professional manual of coat-armour) was preserved at Carmarthen throughout the later Middle Ages: it was indeed repaired in the fifteenth century with a membrane of the sheriffs' accounts. 1 This ordinary referred only to English blazons, but such a hand-book was as useful in Wales as in England to avoid unnecessary confusion.

3 Adam could have given a so much more vivid relation of this sort, but one must be grateful for what there is. Two very readable writers have not yet been mentioned. Neither Walter Map nor Gerald of Wales was a chronicler, but their anecdotal works of literature have peculiar merits, and dangers, as sources. Walter Map, unlike Gerald, wrote little, but his Courtiers' Trifles (De Nugis Curialium) is justly famous. 4 1 Chronicon Adae de Usk, AD 1377-1421, ed. with trans. E. M. Thompson (2nd ed. London 1904).

This sort of record is inevitably lopsided, created by chance survival: other than Llanthony, Dore (which may be regarded as Welsh for our purposes) is the only house whose books survive in any number. Any conclusions to be drawn from the titles and dates of the existing manuscripts would have to be tentative: sometimes they merely illustrate a known fact, like the relation of William the Conqueror kept at Brecon, which was a cell of Battle, itself named after the battle of Hastings. 1 Liturgical books have a special interest.
