Amelia Cormack knew that her husband and elder son had been fascinated by machines and all manner of gadgetry, both mechanical and electrical, and that her younger son did not share this intense interest. 35 In May 1942, during Allan Cormack’s first semester, there appeared in the local press editorials that were critical of UCT’s students, suggesting that some were shirking their duty to South Africa by not enlisting in the war effort.
49 Allan graduated with his BSc in Physics a week before Christmas on 18 December 1944 and, having been inspired by his mentor RW James, he decided to return to UCT the following year to pursue an MSc. Before taking that next step, however, Allan had a two-month summer vacation to enjoy.
