Der so genannte Angang galt als wichtig: Daraus, wem man als Erstem auf dem Weg zu einer bestimmten Aufgabe begegnete, schloss man, wie gut die Erfüllung der Aufgabe gelingen würde. Mit einer Unzahl von Orakeln wurden Aussagen über die Zukunft gemacht. Für die agrarisch dominierte Ökonomie waren selbstredend »Wettervorhersagen« von größter Bedeutung. Hier verband sich Erfahrungswissen mit magischem Denken. Als Scherze oder Traditionsgut ohne praktische Relevanz sind Elemente der Mantik im kollektiven Gedächtnis geblieben (schwarze Katze bringt Unglück; Siebenschläfertag).

Man hat hier dezidiert von kirchlicher Magie gesprochen (Labouvie 1992: 198–219).
Eine der langlebigsten bezieht sich auf den Hexenflug. Der Flug, so argumentierte etwa Duerr, sei in Wahrheit ein Rauscherlebnis, ausgelöst durch halluzinogene pflanzliche Drogen (Duerr 1984, 17–38). ua 56 Hexen und Magie Sabbat einrieben. Der Historiker Jules Michelet (1798–1874) hatte im 19. Jahrhundert sogar behauptet, die Hexen seien Kräuterkundige gewesen, die ganzen Dorfgemeinschaften auf deren Verlangen Rauschdrogen verabreichten, um sie so die schlechten Lebensbedingungen vergessen zu lassen (Michelet 1987 [1862]).
