Crown Dependencies owe allegiance to the Crown, not to Parliament. They are dependent upon the protection of the Crown against foreign aggressors and they may not declare war on another country without the consent of the Crown. However, internally, Crown Dependencies are autonomous; and Jersey citizens have their own government; their own laws and legal system; their own health, education and social services; their own post office; their own coinage; and their own flag.

All the wartime records for Jersey were released under the fifty year rule during the 1990s. Some of Guernsey’s war records and all of those for Alderney are, unusually, embargoed for 100 years by Her Majesty’s Government without explanation. Jersey has certainly begun to come to terms with the Occupation better than its fellow islands. The Liberation Sculpture on Liberation square commemorates the citizens of Jersey and their endurance of and liberation from the Occupation. There are also memorials to slave workers and other foreign nationals, notably the bunker memorial at La Hougue Bie, who suffered and died at the hands of the Germans on Jersey.
