First, Huxley's was a pluralistic synthesis. For example, he accepted the reality of both adaptive and non-adaptive characters; and by the same token, he acknowledged the role of both selective and accidental factors as causal agencies.
14-15) The great obstacle he had to face was that at that time there were no full-time posts in physiology in England: physiology was taught to medical students by clinicians as a side-line. I have already described the very effective steps that he took to remedy this deficiency.
