Une des conclusions majeures de la littérature sociologique sur le travail heurte ainsi de front les présupposés des économistes, et notamment l’hypothèse selon laquelle les salariés se comportent prioritairement comme des « passagers clandestins » et optent pour des comportements opportunistes [Coutrot, 2002].
La coopération renvoie précisément à une situation où des agents fournissent un effort collectif sans savoir si d’éventuels gains individuels compenseront l’effort fourni. C’est le cas, par exemple, s’ils ne peuvent mesurer les retombées individuelles qu’ils peuvent espérer d’une action collective. Nous mobiliserons ici deux types de travaux économiques qui, en écartant le recours à la contrainte (l’autorité) et aux incitations, permettent d’avancer dans la compréhension de la firme comme lieu d’une — certaine — coopération.
Enfin, les agents économiques ne possèdent pas la rationalité que les modèles de la théorie des incitations leur prêtent. Leurs capacités de calcul sont au contraire limitées, ce qui explique là encore que dans la réalité les formules salariales sont moins complexes que celles obtenues par les modèles. 3.
