Although George had developed a drug habit during his days in a rock band, after they dated for several months, Linda gave him an ultimatum: he had to choose her or the drugs. He chose her and proposed on Christmas Eve, 1974, telling Linda that he wanted to grow old with her. They married in a small Catholic church in Williston, Vermont, on March 8, 1975, Linda’s eighteenth birthday. George’s parents had opposed the marriage, and many of their family and friends told them that it would quickly end in divorce.

On top of that, his girlfriend was still awake inside the house. After debating with himself for several minutes, he decided that he had to chance it. He blindfolded Samantha, and after taking one last look around, led her from the truck into the shed. He had prepared the shed for a potential guest before leaving the house earlier in the evening. Two heaters were running, keeping the inside of the shed warm, and a 9 x 12 foot tarp covered most of the floor. To immobilize his captive, he grabbed a piece of rope and noosed it around her neck, then fastened it to the walls with several screws.

If he went through with taking her, he would have to break two fundamental rules. The first rule of the hunt was never hunt near home. It was a rule he had always heeded well, until now. The second rule was to never use his own vehicle for abductions. Bringing his own vehicle into the equation would exponentially increase his risk of being caught, but something about Samantha compelled him to chance it. Her acquiescence to his demands during their initial encounter emboldened him. He savored the feeling of power.
