Stewart, Fatima, Raymet and Gina (the four students you met in Chapter 1) support the contentions shared here, but it won’t surprise you that, like other students, they sometimes find writing difficult. Stewart came to nursing from a career in commerce, where his writing was much more sparing and less reflective than is often required in nursing. Fatima and Raymet note that they not only wrestle with writing in the required nursing form, but also with some of the conventions of academic discussion as presented in British universities.
Reflection focuses on experience and admits feelings into the equation. We proceed then to a review of why reflection is so essential in nursing and why it is emphasised within your nursing course. While we as nurses are not the only healthcare professionals to reflect, we suspect that we use the skill more than many to explore our own roles and what nursing as a whole stands for and delivers. Finally, the chapter explores some of the best principles of reflection – things that you will need to take into account as you reflect alongside your course studies.
Another important aptitude associated with reflection (especially on action) is empathy. We need to be able to appreciate the actions of others in context and with reference to circumstances that brought the event about (Slote, 2007). We argue, then, that reflection is: a process whereby experience is examined in ways that give meaning to interaction. We might examine the experience in real time or in retrospect. Because experience engages the emotions as well as reasoning, reflection needs to take account of the feelings engendered within an interaction and to allow that perceptions (how we interpret matters) may sometimes prove erroneous.
