Vanderbilt had behaved shabbily in his treatment of Wolfe in an interview published in the New York Herald Tribune, Febm:ary I 8 , 193 5 . Also Wolfe had given him an excerpt from the planned but unpublished preface to O f Time and the River about the problems of the American artist. Nowell had retrieved it from Vanderbilt when she was trying to salvage the rejected preface to sell as a literary essay by Wolfe.
