He is not hesitant to prompt an actor who has forgotten a line or to chide him for misspeaking his dialogue. If he thinks it necessary, he quotes the stage directions from the text as though to order the actors to follow them to the letter. His active participation in the process of the production, in which no part is specifically written for him, reminds one of the French director pictured by Jean Fauquet in The Painting of the Martyrdom of St. Apollonia (c. 1460) guiding his amateur actors throughout performance with his baton and text in hand.

A song is sung in praise of Ganesa, the elephantheaded god of good fortune, and deities of the local temples. Afterwards two young dancers named Balarama and Gopala dance. This is followed by an introduction of the clown and his kodangi tribe. Next the mask of Ganesa is presented behind a curtain held by assistants. Songs of praise are sung in honour of the god. After this ritual segment is completed, the bhagavata and the clown converse. Eventually, there is a dance of the strivesa (male performers dressed in female costumes) featuring many complicated rhythmic patterns and movements.

The auspiciousness of the performance is nowhere more apparent to the spectators than during the preliminary rituals that precede the dramas. The exact number and type of these rituals varies from village to village depending on the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. The preliminaries practised in Sankaradeva’s own time are uncertain, in part because he gave them no set form. Traditional performances of ankiya nat are all-night affairs, beginning after the evening meal and continuing from approximately nine at night until daybreak.
