He smiles, lifted through the exhaustion as always by her highness’s dainty face and button nose. He pulls the pink comforter a little higher, gives her a kiss, and heads across the hall to Anthony’s Cars sanctum. Anthony is asleep, lying on his back, wearing his favorite number 3 baseball shirt. He is surrounded by posters and cutouts of his favorite characters from the Disney Pixar movie Cars. His waycool boy’s room, as with every eclectic room in the cozy home, was designed by mom Stacy and lovingly decorated by both parents.

He worked around the driveway without any enthusiasm, picking up a few toys. Maybe a trip, just Stacy and him, might make a difference. Stacy loved to travel, drawn to hot beaches and tropical drinks decorated with little paper umbrellas. Or maybe just a weekend jaunt on their his-and-hers Harleys, just him and Stacy, to see the fall colors. It couldn’t be over for them. The kids loved Stacy. A trip, a way to unwind, that would bring back the spark. The kids were their joy. They were gorgeous kids, the flaming center of Peterson’s life, his purpose.
